HISTORY OF THE BELL TOWER

The Bells of
our lady of mt carmel

For generations, the bell tower at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church has served as both a spiritual symbol and a voice to the surrounding community. In 2013, after nearly three months of silence, that voice rang out again—clearer and stronger than ever—thanks to a complete refurbishment of the church’s historic bells and the remodeling of the bell tower itself.
Led by Monsignor Ken Schaefer, the church underwent a thoughtful restoration process to bring new life to the bells that had long marked time, celebration, and reflection for parishioners. The refurbished bells were carefully repositioned higher within the newly remodeled bell tower. This not only improved their visibility, but also enhanced their resonance, allowing the sound to travel farther and be more fully appreciated throughout the area.
The renewed bell tower is more than a structural upgrade—it represents OLMC’s dedication to preserving tradition while continuing to grow and serve. With each chime, the bells echo the faith and commitment of the parish community, past and present. Whether marking Mass, weddings, or special events, the bells of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel continue to be a meaningful presence in Herrin—calling all to pause, reflect, and celebrate the blessings of faith.
